Without Sight

Last night a fellow church member and I went to visit a less active member of our congregation. My companion was blind. He moved into our congregation a few months ago, but this was the first opportunity I had to spend more than just a few minutes talking to him. After I dropped him off at his apartment and headed home, I started thinking.

As a side note, I am an avid science fiction reader.

I was trying to figure out what a species might be like if they had evolved with no visual capabilities, I am including infrared and ultraviolet in the definition of visual capabilities. Would they have something like a super sonar or “ears” that extended all the way around their head? Would their tactile sense be greater, would they be able to feel particles in the air that were blown onto their skin? Could they communicate by sense of smell? What other, completely different, sense might they have developed? Being unable to see stars, would they ever develop the curiosity to travel in space?

If anyone out there wants to take this idea and write a book, you have my permission. I ask only that you send me a copy of the completed manuscript or book if it is published.
